Must-Have Softwares: killer applications

List of Must-Have Softwares that I have been using for a while. I personally prefer Freewares as I am beginning to see them as the way of the New Life. But there are some Paid Softwares too here. And you know where to get’em (ahem… *coughs violently*…..torrents…. ahem…. )skullI have been meaning to write this post for a very long time.
My main aim was to write a detailed review on every Essential Software that I tested and am currently using in my PC. But I re-thought the structure and decided to write only small reviews of them so that I could include many of them. I will be constantly updating this post, adding softwares on the go. I won’t drag it any further.

Here are Ashok’s Must-Have Softwares:

  1. BurnAware-Free: Used to Burn CD/DVD/Blu-ray Discs. The UI is very similar to Nero. Even a kid could operate it. I found absolutely no issues with this piece of software (Even Burns ISO Images). Can easily be used as an alternative to Nero (No need to wait for painstaking hours for the installation). Its a mere 5 MB (Nero is some Hundreds). Click here to Download
The only thing missing from this is Creating an Image from CD/DVD. But that is solved with ISO Recorder.
  2. Free Download Manager: You just can’t live without this, if you are a downloader. Its the BEST there is. And what more… Its free. It can even download Flash Videos from sites like Youtube. I use this very frequently. If used in the ‘Heavy Mode’ it uses every last bit of your Bandwidth to download the files. A Great Download Accelerator and Manager.  Download here.
  3. Daemon-tools: The Best Optical Media Emulation Tool out there. Free. It creates as many as 5 Virtual DVD drives which can be used to mount any kind of Virtual Images like

    • b5t (BlindWrite images) dam
    • b6t (BlindWrite images)
    • bwt (BlindRead images)
    • ccd (CloneCD images)
    • cdi (DiscJuggler images)
    • cue (Cue sheets)
    • iso (Standard ISO images)
    • mds (Media Descriptor Files)
    • nrg (Nero images)
    • pdi (Instant CD/DVD images)
    • isz (Compressed ISO images) . Download Daemon Tools Lite 4304 Here.
  4. K-Lite Code Pack – Full: This is a Must. I prefer this one as it comes bundled with the Light-Weight Media Player Classic (One hell of a Seek/Forward/Reverse Option). With the K-Lite Codec Pack you should be able to play 99% of all the movies that you download from the internet. Be sure to choose Full Installation when installing. Download K-Lite 5 here.
Another Good Alternate is the Video Lan VLC Player.
  5. Adobe Photoshop CS4 Extended: I don’t suppose I need to explain about Photoshop. You see a digital photo and the only thing that comes to your mind is Photoshop. An Image Manipulation and Graphics editing program that has everything you need (almost). All you need to learn is how to use it. After five years of using it, I still am learning. Download Photoshop Torrent here.
  6. WordWeb : WordWeb is a comprehensive one-click English thesaurus and dictionary for Windows. This has two options that no other dictionary has - Ctrl+Right Mouse Click any word in any program to get its meaning & It works from the System Tray – Press Ctrl+Alt+W to bring it up. And its only about 5 MB (Free) and 9 MB (Pro). Light-Weight Program. Download Free Version Here and Pro Version Torrent Here . Pro is much more accurate when detecting the right spelling.
  7. Foxit PDF Reader:  Free Light Weight PDF Reader – Only 3 MB. Its a very good alternative to Adobe Reader whose updates seems to cross 100 Megs. Download Foxit Here
  8. 7zip: Free Alternative to WinRar. It also has better Compression Ratios than WinRar or WinZip. And the password is encrypted in AES (My Final Year Project). Download Here.
  9. IrfanView: An excellent Image Viewer – I use it to preview my Photoshop PSD files. But it supports almost all of the industry standard Image formats. Download Here.
  10. CheatBook Database 2009:The encyclopedia of game cheats. A die hard gamer would get pissed if they saw someone using cheats and walkthroughs in games, but you have to agree, sometimes little hint or the "God Mode" becomes necessary to beat a particularly hard part of the game. If you're an avid gamer and want a few extra weapons and tools the survive the game, CheatBook DataBase is exactly the resource you would want. Covering more than 16.000 Games , this database represents all genres and focuses on recent releases. Download Here.
  11. Switch Off: It can shutdown or restart your computer, disconnect your current dial-up connection, and lock your workstation. It provides fast access to these operations through system tray icon. Download Here.
  12. ISO Recorder: A Freeware used to Create CD/DVD Images to Hard Disk. Creates a context menu in the explorer on the CD/DVD icon so that when we insert a CD/DVD and right-click on it, it give Options Such as “Copy CD to CD” and “Create Image”. Useful little bugger this is. Download Here.
  13. Nrg2Iso: A tool used to convert Nero Image Files (.nrg extension) to Standard Virtual CD Image – ISO (.iso extension). Download here.
nrgUIF2ISO Converter can be downloaded here.
  14. TeamViewer: Allows to share Desktops. It means you can see your friends desktop on your PC and control your Friends Keyboad and Mouse and everything else. Pretty useful to show or share something. Download Here.
  15. Microsoft XP Powertoys:
Image Resizer: This PowerToy enables you to resize one or many image files with a right-click.
Virtual Desktop Manager: Manage up to four desktops from the Windows taskbar with this PowerToy.
Tweak UI: This PowerToy gives you access to system settings that are not exposed in the Windows XP default user interface, including mouse settings, Explorer settings, taskbar settings, and more.
  16. Jazz Jackrabbit 2 Game: This game really should not need any introduction at all. It is the sequel of the ever so popular Jazz Jackrabbit. If you haven't played any of these games or even heard about them, you have been living far away from any civilization. Jazz Jackrabbit is one of the best known and best loved arcade games ever to be made throughout the gaming history. Download Here.
  17. CDisplay Comic Reader: CDisplay Comic Reader 1.8 is a powerful program to be used as image visualizer specially in comics. Download Here.
  18. CountDown Timer: TimeLeft is a versatile desktop utility - it can be used as a countdown clock, reminder, clock, alarm clock, tray clock, stopwatch, timer, sticker, auction watch, work days/hours countdown clock and time synchronization utility.  Download Here.
  19. Windows Live Writer: Writer makes it easy to share your photos and videos on almost any blog service—Windows Live, Wordpress, Blogger, LiveJournal, TypePad, and many more. Its the best Blogging software out there. A little heavy on the resources but is pretty advanced in its features. Blogging for me has become a breeze after I started using Live Writer. The formatting and designing part for me has become very easy and including  pictures and albums (not to mention tables) is a kids play. This is one essential software for me. Download Here.
  20. µTorrent : µTorrent is the world's most popular BitTorrent client. Download Movies, Music, Applications, Anime… You Name it. Just download the .torrent file from any of the sites like or Mininova and add it to µTorrent.  Download Here.uto

  21. Unlocker: Ever had these messages on screen when deleting or Moving Files?

  23. Picasa 3: The easy way to find, edit, and share your photos. 25. Portable Apps: Now you can carry your favorite computer programs along with all of your bookmarks, settings, email and more with you. Use them on any Windows computer. All without leaving any personal data behind. You might wanna Have a look at this website. There are too numerous softwares to point out. Just Browse through and enjoy.

  26. AutoHotKey: I found this app when I was trying to decode a virus Code. I first thought this script language was used to create viruses, but studying this made me realize how very wrong I was. I learnt (with reference of course) this when I was trying to invent a virus for Ashish’s PC in my 3rd Year Second Semister Supply Holidays. But later created many more apps. The Digi-Souvenir that I’ve posted earlier was created using this code. Even my first application – Felix Timer to control BSNL timings was created using this. I write code in this script all the time – Even My Logins to emails, banks are automated using this. With this piece of software you can - AutoHotkey_logo

  • Automate almost anything by sending keystrokes and mouse clicks. You can write a mouse or keyboard macro by hand or use the macro recorder.
  • Create hotkeys for keyboard, joystick, and mouse. Virtually any key, button, or combination can become a hotkey.
  • Expand abbreviations as you type them. For example, typing "btw" can automatically produce "by the way".
  • Create custom data-entry forms, user interfaces, and menu bars. See GUI for details.
  • Remap keys and buttons on your keyboard, joystick, and mouse.
  • Respond to signals from hand-held remote controls via the WinLIRC client script.
  • Run existing AutoIt v2 scripts and enhance them with new capabilities.
  • Convert any script into an EXE file that can be run on computers that don't have AutoHotkey installed.

    Download Here.
Another alternative to AutoHotKey is AutoIT V3. But if you ask me, I’d prefer AHK.

Hope You had enough. I’ll try to keep this post updated on the go. I mean, we never know what we might need. I wanna do a post on Linux Distros and Linux for Beginners cuz I had and still having finding a decent article for it. When I’m through testing the distros, I will do it. But for now, this will be it. I sure hope you  found something interesting on this page.

If there are any broken links or any suggested Freewares/Softwares/Essentials that you’d like to suggest to be kept in the post, please leave a comment or Contact me or Prasu.
