Text On Fire: Photoshop Tutorial

You ever wondered how they create those images with the text on fire? Well, its pretty easy to do. Honestly. Just a few clicks and you’re done. Follow the below given steps one by one and you can create one by yourself in a matter of minutes. I wrote everything vividly so that even a beginner has no trouble understanding the procedure.
ECE Rocks Fire Text

Title: Text On Fire
Type: Beginner
Software: Adobe Photoshop – Any Version
Time Required: 5 Minutes for First Time users, 2 Minute for those who already know the procedure

Follow the instructions carefully and do exactly the same things, to get the same effect.

  1. Open Photoshop, Go to File Menu and Click on New to create a new blank image. Give the File a Name in the Name Field - “ECE Rocks Fire Text”. Select the type and size of the image – I’ve selected Web type with size as 1024 x 768 Pixels. See the settings below. Click Ok after you are completed. This will create a New document with the size you provided.ECErocks.com_PS tutorial_21112009_122001
  2. Press the “D” letter on your keyboard. It will reset the colors in the boxes to Black as the ForeGround Color and White as the Background Color
    OR
Click on the Black/White boxes which are found in the Toolbox present to the left side of the software. As shown in the Image BelowECErocks.com_PS tutorial_21112009_123447Now press Alt+BackSpace. Doing this will fill the Background Image with the ForeGround Color, that is Black. You can see the change in the image as well as in the Layers Palette, which is present in the right of the Screen. If you can’t see the Layers Window is not there, then you can activate it by pressing ‘F7’ Function Key.

  3. Press the X Button on your Keyboard to interchange the Black/White Colors to White/Black Colors in the tool palette. Alternatively you can click on the arrow above the boxes to interchange the colors as shown.ECErocks.com_PS tutorial_21112009_130505
  4. Now Select the Text Tool by clicking on the ‘T’  icon in the Tools palette as Shown. Click anywhere on the image and you’ll get a cursor. Type the Text you want to LIT UP. I typed “ECE ROCKS”. After you complete typing, Click on the enter that is present on the right bottom corner of your keyboard to accept the changes. If you press the main Enter Button, it will insert a new line. Or alternatively after typing, you can click on the ‘Right’ button present on the right side of the upper bar with the text options. Increase the size of the text to a greater size… (I’ve put 206 pt) and move the Text  a little to the bottom using the move tool (The second tool from the top with the triangle). Or alternately to move the text by holding Down Ctrl key and Hold down the left Mouse Button together, you can move the text around the screen.

  5. Now in the layers palette, select the “ECE ROCKS” Text Layer (or any other that you’ve typed) by clicking on that layer. Press Ctrl+J to duplicate that layer.  This will create another duplicate layer by name “ECE ROCKS Copy” layer with the same text. Press “D'” on the keyboard to select Black/White as the colors. Then Press Alt+BackSpace on the keyboard to change the color of the Text to Black (ForeGround Color). Don’t worry when your screen goes all black (with faintly seen text outlines). Click on the Eye icon present to the left side of the Text layer “ECE ROCKS Copy” so that the Eye disappears. This will hide the Black colored Text Layer (We will use this layer in the end). See the images below to understand better.ECErocks.com_PS tutorial_21112009_133839

  6. Now Select the ECE ROCKS Text Layer and Press Ctrl+E to merge the text layer and background.

  8. Go to Filter Menu –> Stylize –> Wind. This will open the Wind dialog box which has some settings. Select the ‘Wind’ method. Click on the ‘From the Left’ Direction. Click OK when  you are done. Doing so creates a wind effect on the text. You can see the sharp lines on the text.

  9. Press Ctrl+F. This will reapply the filter. You can see the extended lines on the text layer. Press Ctrl+F three times continuously till you see an extended lines a little further away from the text.ECErocks.com_PS tutorial ECE
  10. Now Go to Filter->Blur->Gaussian Blur. This will open the Gaussian Blur Dialog box. Enter 7 as the radius. Click ok.ECErocks.com_PS tutorial_21112009_140643
  11. Now Go to Image Menu –> Image Rotation –> Rotate 90 CCW. This will rotate the Canvas 90 degrees Counter Clockwise. This will straighten the Image.
  12. Select the Background Layer, Press Ctrl+U. You’ll get a dialog box for Hue/Saturation Settings.
  13. Enter Hue as 40, Saturation as 100 and leave the Lightness at 0. You can see the color change to Bright Yellowish Orange. Click Ok.
    ECErocks.com_PS tutorial_21112009_141822
  14. Go to Filter->Liquify… This will open a dialog box for Liquify. This is the core part for creating the fire effect. In the dialog box, Left Click and hold on the upper part of the text. Move upward in a wavy pattern. Do this for every upper portion of the text as shown. After you’ve done once on every letter. Click on the Reconstruct button on thr right side. This will dim things a bit. Click and drag as many times as you want clicking on the reconstruct button till you are satisfied with the overall effect. Click Ok when you are complete. See images below.

  15. The image is not complete yet. There is one last step to do to get the WOW factor.
Now Click on the empty box to the left side of the ECE ROCKS copy text layer so that the Eye econ appears.
    ECErocks.com_PS tutorial_21112009_143904
Now you can see the image by zooming out. Save this image by going to file save as… don’t forget to set the save type as JPG or else you won’t be able to open it in Windows.
Thats it for the basic process.

  16. If you want to change the color of the fire, select the Background layer, Press Ctrl+U for Hue/Saturation Settings, Play around with the Hue bar… drag it till you are satisfied. I personally like the blue fire.
  17. Tips: To have flexibility in changing the color of the text, Instead of step 12,  go to Layer Menu-> New Adjustment Layer –> Hue/Saturation. A dialog box opens asking for a name. Enter “Color Settings” and then press OK. This will open the Hue/Saturation Settings dialog box. Tick the ‘Colorize’ option in the dialog box,  then You can see this adjustment layer in the Layers Palette.

    ECErocks.com_PS tutorial_21112009_141707
When you double click on the Color Settings Adjustments layer. The Hue/Saturation Color will appear and you can change it as frequently as possible without destroying the pixel data. The process defined earlier Ctrl+U is a destructive process. But the Adjustments Layer never alters the original data. So you can be sure that you can change anything you want anytime.

Hope you Understood, enjoyed and would try  the tutorial.
